Marco Scarci - 5 Reasons Not to See Me for Surgery

Transcript

I recently saw a patient who wanted an operation done immediately, and I did not agree. That conversation made me think about the reasons you might not want to see me for surgery. So let me explain when I may not be the right surgeon for you. First, I will not operate if it means bypassing the normal processes that help us deliver the best care. That includes discussion at a multidisciplinary team meeting, or consultation with other specialists, to make sure that surgery is genuinely the right treatment for your situation. Second, I will not operate simply because your neighbour, your friend, or Google told you that surgery is the answer. A recommendation is a starting point, not a diagnosis. Treatment decisions should be based on your individual circumstances, and proper clinical assessment. Third, I will not agree to operate and then discharge you early just to reduce your hospital bill. If I believe you need intensive care, a high-dependency unit, or a longer stay in hospital, I will plan for that. Cutting corners is not something I am prepared to do. Fourth, I am not the cheapest surgeon you will find. If cost is your primary concern, there may be other options. But if you choose to come to me, I can assure you that either I or my team will see you daily - and sometimes more than once a day, if needed. Fifth, I am available around the clock through my emergency answering service, where a real person picks up the phone rather than an automated system. If something goes wrong or you have concerns, you will always be able to reach someone who can help. So, those are the reasons you might not want to see me. But, if you value thorough planning, proper specialist involvement, and a surgeon who will be with you throughout your journey - then please contact my team to arrange a consultation.
