5 Questions to Ask Me at Your Consultation
Transcript
When you come to see me for a consultation - your time matters. In this video, I'll share five important questions to help you get the most from our appointment. A thoracic consultation covers a lot of ground, but a good first question to ask is: "What exactly is my diagnosis, and what does it mean for me?" I will explain your condition in plain language and how it may affect your daily life. Understanding your diagnosis is the foundation of every decision we make together. Your second question should be: "What are all my treatment options?" For most thoracic conditions, there are several possible approaches, from careful observation and medication, through to surgery. I will explain the benefits, risks, and expected outcomes of each option, so you can make a fully informed choice. Also, please ask me: "Will you use keyhole surgery, and why or why not?" Where clinically appropriate, I use video‐assisted thoracoscopic surgery, known as VATS, which requires only small incisions. This typically means less discomfort, smaller scars, and a faster return to your normal activities. The fourth question is: "What should I expect during my recovery?" I will give you a clear timeline, covering hospital stay, pain management, and when you can typically return to work, or exercise. Every recovery plan is tailored to your individual circumstances. Finally, please ask: who else will be involved in my care? Thoracic treatment often involves a wider team, but I will lead your care personally from consultation through to follow‐up, ensuring consistency and clear communication at every stage. If you are preparing for a thoracic consultation or would like a second opinion, my team and I are here to help. Visit my website to learn more about the conditions I treat and to book your appointment.
