Facial Blushing Treatment
Transcript
Facial blushing can feel sudden, intense and deeply uncomfortable. For many, it's more than just a physical reaction - it can impact confidence, work, and social life. If you blush easily or excessively, you're not alone, and there are effective options to help you regain control. Blushing is triggered by the sympathetic nervous system — your body's "fight or flight" response. For some people, this system overreacts, causing the face to flush without a clear reason. It's a physiological response, not a personal failing, and it can become worse over time without treatment. We usually start by exploring non-surgical options. These include lifestyle changes, cognitive behavioural therapy, and medications such as beta-blockers. For some, these approaches work well. But if blushing continues to dominate your daily life, we may discuss more definitive treatments. When facial blushing is severe and resistant to therapy, a procedure called endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy, or ETS, may be an option. This surgery interrupts the nerves responsible for triggering the blush reflex - offering a long-term solution for many patients. ETS is performed under general anaesthetic using keyhole surgery. Through tiny incisions in the chest, I cut or clip the overactive sympathetic nerves. The procedure usually takes around 30 minutes, and patients often return home the same day. For the right patient, ETS can be life-changing. In many cases, facial blushing stops immediately after surgery. People often describe a boost in confidence, allowing them to participate more fully in their personal and professional lives. However, it's important to consider the risks. The most common side effect is compensatory sweating - where sweating increases in other parts of the body, such as the back or abdomen. While this is usually mild, it can be bothersome for some people. That's why I spend time with every patient to understand your symptoms, expectations, and lifestyle. ETS isn't suitable for everyone, and careful assessment ensures that the benefits outweigh any possible downsides for you personally. We'll also review your medical history, explore non-surgical strategies again if appropriate, and explain the surgical process in detail. You'll always have the opportunity to ask questions — and make an informed decision in your own time. If you do go ahead with ETS, you'll receive expert care before, during, and after your surgery. I follow my patients closely, ensuring a smooth recovery and supporting your transition back to everyday life with more confidence. If facial blushing is holding you back, help is available. Whether you're just beginning to explore treatment or ready to discuss surgery, I'm here to support you.
